Oakleigh Plate History

The time-honoured Oakleigh Plate was first run in 1884 and Malua was the first horse to take out the title.

The original distance of the race was six furlongs, which remained the same right up until 1972 when Australia implemented the metric system and the distance was changed to the distance it is today of 1100m.

Always a respected and prestigious event, the Oakleigh Plate began as a Principal race before gaining Group 1 standing in 1980.
