Oakleigh Plate 2012 Start Planned For First Command – Race Preview

January 25th, 2012

The Oakleigh Plate is due to run at Caulfield Racecourse on February 25, 2012, at Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne.

The Group 2 race is run under handicap conditions and is open to horses of any age.

The 2012 Oakleigh Plate is worth $350,000 in prize money and will be run over a distance of 1,100 metres.

First Command is expected to run in this year’s Oakleigh Plate.

The six-year-old gelding won his last start in the Listed Kensignton Stakes at Flemington on January 21.

Trainer Anthony Freedman had originally had the Newmarket handicap on his radar as a possible autumn race start, however, First Command’s latest win may have weighted him out of the race.

“The 1000m today was perfect and the 1100m will be perfect, but the Newmarket is a tough race to win and horses like him may have missed their chance,” Freedman said.

“I’m big on putting them where they can win and not getting ahead of yourself.”

The Oakleigh Plate 2012 will be run on Blue Diamond Stakes day alongside the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes, Group 1 Futurity Stakes, Group 2 Autumn Classic, Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes, Group 2 St George Stakes, Group 3 Mannerism Stales and Listed Victoria Gold Cup.
