The Mick Price-trained duo of Lankan Rupee and Lion Of Belfort are both on track to contest the Oakleigh Plate and will race for the first time in the Rubiton Stakes this weekend.

Lankan Rupee stamped himself as a horse to watch with two impressive wins at the end of his spring campaign in the Listed Earl Grey Stakes (1000m) and Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1200m) and Price believes that the Redoute’s Choice gelding is a chance of recording his third straight victory this weekend.

“I think Lankan is will put himself there to win, he’s more forward and is going to hit the line well,” Price told Racing Victoria.

“He’s a four-year-old gelding so he’s uncomplicated and he’s big and strong and sound and tough.

“He also carries no issues apart from the fact that he needs to be fit enough.

“He flies the gates and puts himself there like a good sprinter but I’d just love to see him relax a little bit better and not be compromised at the finish.”

Lion Of Belfort worked through the grades impressively during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, winning the Blue Sapphire before finishing third in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), and is rated a leading chance to take out the 2014 Oakleigh Plate.

The Statue Of Liberty colt has been well-backed to take out the Rubiton Stakes, but Price warned punters that they may not see the best of the three-year-old until he runs in the Oakleigh Plate in a fortnights time.

“I was going to try and run Lion Of Belfort in the Hareeba to split them apart but it wasn’t working with how I wanted to plan his preparation,” Price said.

“He galloped this morning and had a bit of a blow which is another reason why I wanted to keep him for the Hareeba but if I keep him for the Hareeba it makes everything a bit messy.

“They’ve both only had one trial each so they might be a little vulnerable first up but that’s OK because they’ll both improve a lot.”

The 2014 Oakleigh Plate contenders are currently battling for favoritism in 2014 Rubiton Stakes betting markets; with Lankan Rupee ($3.10) a narrow favourite from Lion Of Belfort ($3.20).
