Sadler Relishing 2015 Oakleigh Plate Chances of Vain Queen

February 24th, 2015

Having initially outlined last weekend’s Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington as an ideal first point-of-call for talented mare Vain Queen, trainer John Sadler has revealed he is thrilled to have held off for Saturday’s 2015 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield.

The world’s leading sprinter Lankan Rupee lined-up as one of just six Lightning Stakes contenders on Saturday, and while leaving as second-favourite behind the previously unbeaten Deep Field, reassured his dominance when hitting the line close to four lengths in the clear of his closest rival Brazen Beau.

Having completed a strong hit-out at Caulfield on Tuesday morning, Sadler told TVN he is thrilled with the condition of Vain Queen and is confident of a competitive first-up performance from the five-year-old in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate.

“After watching Lankan Rupee, I’m really pleased I didn’t run her,” Sadler said.

“I thought maybe a Group 1 placing for her at weight-for-age, but it will be better if we can win a Group 1 on Saturday.

“I’m not saying she’ll win, but I’m really pleased with her.

“I feel very confident after this morning that she’s going to run a great race.

“I was pretty pleased with the way she pulled up. I think she’s going into the race as one of the serious chances.”

Securing seven wins from her 12 competitive appearances on course so far, Vain Queen returned to racing in typically competitive form in 2014; running fourth in the Hyland Race Colours Handicap (1000m) first-up, and while luckless when blocked for a run and sixth in the PFD Food Services Handicap (1100m) on May 17th, responded well in taking out the Dominant Handicap (1200m) and All Victorian Sprint Series Heat 8 (1100m) in succession.

Placing fourth in each of the Listed All Victoria Sprint Series Final (1200m), Group 3 Stakes (1100m) and Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m), the daughter of Artie Schiller returned to the winner’s circle in the Group 3 Mumm Stakes (1100m) last time out on Crown Oaks Day.

The 2015 Oakleigh Plate final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
