Earthquake In Career-best form Ahead of 2015 Oakleigh Plate

February 26th, 2015

A standout performer over the 2014 edition of the Autumn Carnival, Godolphin Racing Manager Jason Walsh is confident talented filly Earthquake is in career-best condition ahead of her racing return in Saturday’s 2015 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield.

Unable to reach the same racing highs over spring whilst still posting several commendable results, Earthquake has not been on course since finishing a disappointing eighth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on November 1st; having been caught on the wrong side of the Flemington track.

Citing her impressive victory in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at this meet in 2014, Walsh is thrilled with the condition of the Exceed And Excel filly and is confident she is more than capable of 2015 Oakleigh Plate success.

“She’s never looked better,” Walsh told AAP.

“She’s big and strong and extremely healthy so we’re really excited to be stepping out a very talented filly again in what’s going to be a very competitive Group One handicap.

“She’s got a great record at Caulfield and her best would be the testing material.”

Having drawn barrier 11, up-and-coming jockey Chad Schofield has been confirmed to take the ride at 50.5kgs and is confident the conditions of the Oakleigh Plate will play directly into Earthquake’s strengths.

“Hopefully we can get a bit of cover and I’m sure she’ll be very strong to the line with no weight on her back,” he said.

Debuting with an impressive three lengths victory in a minor over 1000m in late 2013, Earthquake book-ended her Blue Diamond victory with wins in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) and Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m); returning to the paddock following a strong run for second in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m).

Placing third in each of the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) upon returning in spring, Earthquake charged home to win the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) on October 11th, in what was her only other start prior to the Stud Stakes. is currently offering the best 2015 Oakleigh Plate odds for which Earthquake is currently rated an outright $5 favourite.
