Shamal Wind Wins Oakleigh Plate 2015 – Results

March 2nd, 2015

Robert Smerdon celebrated an upset quinella in Saturday’s 2015 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield Racecourse with Shamal Wind defeating stablemate Under The Louvre in the famous Blue Diamond Stakes Day sprint.

Sixteen sprinters took their spots in the $400,000 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival, with Smerdon preparing the first two over the line in the quickly run dash.

“Unbelievable,” the ecstatic trainer said post win.

“A really good outcome.”

Gary Portelli’s I’m All The Talk was the best oust of the barriers and set a white hot pace to lead in the handicap showdown.

He pulled out to a two length lead by the turn form home and still had a margin on his rivals with just 200m left to travel.

Up the inside a host of gallopers started to really wind up including Atmospherical and the eventual runner-up Under The Louvre, who Smerdon thought had it in the bag.

“I settled on Under The Louvre,” he said of the Excellent Art stallion, the four-year-old getting the cheap sectionals along the rails.

“I thought he was in a good spot.

“I thought he was nearly going to win it.”

It was five-year-old Dubawi mare Shamal Wind, coming off a win in the Listed WJ Adams Stakes (1000m) at Sandown on January 26, however who snuck up to fly home down the outside and get to the top 25 metres from home.

The flashing run from the widely-drawn winner and hoop Dwayne Dunn was enough for Shamal Wind ($10) to find the line first three-quarters of a length ahead of the Daniel Moor-ridden Under The Louvre ($17).

“I’ve got to watch the replay to see where Shamal Wind came from,” Smerdon said.

“She emerged late, I need to see the replay to appreciate it.”

Adding even more value to the juicy Oakleigh Plate trifecta in a brave third just a neck further back was the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Fast ‘n’ Rocking ($18) before the better fancied duo Vain Queen ($6.50) and Atmospherical ($8.50) ran fourth and fifth respectively.

Race favourite was Blue Diamond Stakes winning filly Earthquake who, first-up on Saturday could only manage to cross six and a quarter lengths away 10th as the $5 favourite with the 50.5kg light weight.

Smerdon was quick to credit Bloodstock agent James Harron after the victory, who was confident Shamal Wind could still win a Group 1 despite her trainer’s queries.

“I thought the Group 1, she’d had her opportunities and had fallen short,” he said.

“But full credit to James Harron.

“James said to keep her fresh, to do the same, try and make it a first-up scenario so we did.

“Credit to him for his commitment to the cause.

“He got the outcome, got a great outcome.”

Shamal Wind won’t be backing up in the $1 million Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on ‘Super Saturday’, March 14, but could head to Sydney for a shot at something like the $2.5 million Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 4.

“No, not at all,” Smerdon said about targeting the Newmarket.

“Today’s race around the corner was always going to be the best scenario.

“We might go to Sydney for some of the sprints there but a great day (today) for both horses.”
