2016 Oakleigh Plate Likely for Fell Swoop

January 13th, 2016

Trainer Matthew Dale has been understandably pleased with the career results posted by Fell Swoop so far, and has revealed he is considering setting his stable star for a first-up run in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 27th.

Failing to handle the late pace when fourth in the Bledisloe Cup Festival BM80 (1000m) on July 11th, Fell Swoop returned to winning form in the Selleys BM75 (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on August 1st; repeating the dose in the TAB Reward BM85 (1000m) before making a successful transition to black type company in the Listed Cup Club Stakes (1200m) on September 5th.

Having returned to the paddock after posting another gutsy win in the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on September 19th, Dale told Racing Ahead he has been pleased with the form displayed by the Not A Single Doubt gelding this time and believes a race like the 2016 Oakleigh Plate is not beyond his abilities.

“He is doing really well,” Dale said.

“He is coming along nicely and we will have a jump-out in two weeks tomorrow.

“The Oakleigh Plate is still there in my mind.

“I am very mindful that I want to be at The Galaxy second-up in Sydney.

“I think that is a really suitable target for him and he does appear more comfortable the Sydney way of going.

“We are continuing to do more work with him the Melbourne way of going through his preparation at the moment, but I won’t make a final call on the Oakleigh Plate until at least after his first jump-out.”

Fell Swoop has been a standout performer since first appearing on course competitively in 2014, posting an impressive eight wins and one minor through ten career starts.

Running second in a Wagga minor over 1000m in his only 2014 start, Fell Swoop was undefeated in a four start campaign through the 2015 Autumn Carnival, highlighted by a comfortable win over notable competition at Rosehill Gardens on February 25th.
