2016 Oakleigh Plate Ideal for Heatherly

February 15th, 2016

Classy filly Heatherly has stamped herself as a serious 2016 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) contender after storming home to win the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield Racecourse over the weekend.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Katelyn Mallyon allowed the filly to stride forward and take an ideal position in running within the classy field of ten as the early race leaders set only a fair tempo from the outset.

Rounding onto the final straight with plenty to do, the Lonhro filly appeared to have a little too much to do but mustered a monumental turn of foot to charge clear and hit the line an impressive five and a half lengths in the clear of closest rival; Group 1 winner Politeness.

Co-trainer Mathew Ellerton was understandably thrilled with Heatherly’s performance in the 2016 Rubiton Stakes and is confident she can carry her form into the 2016 Oakleigh Plate.

“Three-year-old fillies have a great record in it and all being well, that’s the way she’ll head,” Ellerton said after the race.

“You’ve got to have a shot sooner or later and I thought she took good improvement from Flemington a fortnight ago.

“She’s been in work a while, let’s hope she can go another fortnight.”

Heatherly has been a standout performer for Ellerton and co-trainer Simon Zahra since first appearing on course competitively last year; posting an impressive four wins and three minors through eight career starts.

Debuting in February for success in a Moonee Valley minor over 1000m, Heatherly progressed to fifth in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude F (1100m) before ending her maiden campaign second in the Listed Festival Of Racing 1000 (1000m).

Continuing to impress through three minor starts upon resuming in summer, the filly out of Dancing Heather beat a talented field to the line in the Andrew Guy Plate (1100m) at Flemington in her only other start prior to the Rubiton Stakes on January 30th.
