2016 Oakleigh Plate Could Figure for Vezalay

February 16th, 2016

Vezalay was included in nominations for a return in Saturday’s Group 1 Black Caviar Lighting Stakes (1000m), however co-trainer Troy Corstens has revealed the mare may instead be kept for the 2016 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday week.

Vezalay has been a strong and consistent performer for Team Corstens since first appearing on course competitively in late 2014; posting an impressive three wins and three minors through only ten career starts.

Having returned to the paddock after taking out the Listed Alinghi Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on October 17th, Corstens told RSN the team will discuss all options for the Shamardal mare prior to accepting into the Lightning Stakes field on Wednesday morning.

“We are going to sit down with Brad tomorrow morning and we will have a good chat and decide where we want to go and if we want to accept,” Corstens said.

“If we do accept we will pull her blood on Thursday and make sure that everything is spot on going into that.

“I don’t know, but I would say Chautauqua is going to run and it looks like a cracking field.

“If she doesn’t run Saturday in the Lightning we are going to run her in the Oakleigh Plate.

“She is very good around the 1100 at Caulfield, so we would probably lead towards the bend with her.

“If there is only a really small field on Saturday or something like that then we will definitely be having a look at it.”

Regardless of the first-up option taken with the mare, Corstens is thrilled with her overall condition and is confident she is ready to run a big race.

“We are very happy with her,” Corstens said.

“She has really been great in her trials – she had one trial around a bend and one trial down the straight as well.

“She only ran third, but we have the blinkers up her sleeve which we didn’t put on.”

Vezalay returned to racing in spring for success in a Caulfield minor over 1100m; progressing to third in the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m), sixth in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) and fourth in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) leading into her Alinghi Stakes triumph.

The 2016 Oakleigh Plate field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, February 24th.
