One of three elite levels on the Blue Diamond Stakes Day card this weekend, the $500,000 Group 1 Clamms Seafood Oakleigh Plate (1100m) is the sprint feature on the line-up.

Two female gallopers are battling for top spot in pre-field Oakleigh Plate betting this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival with three-year-old Heatherly and five-year-old Bounding dominating the odds.

Prepared by Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra, Lonhro filly Heatherly is looking to become the first filly to take out the Oakleigh Plate since Miss Kournikova (2001).

She comes off three straight wins this time in, including the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield a fortnight ago where she enjoyed an all-too-easy five and a half-length victory.

She is now two from three over Saturday’s distance and shooting for the Rubiton Stakes – Oakleigh Plate double Lankan Rupee (2014) took out two years ago.

Bounding is trained by Peter & Paul Snowden and returns to racing on the weekend after a good spring campaign.

The five-year-old daughter of Lonhro’s last Caulfield run was a four length win over Rich Enuff in the Group 3 The Heath 1100 and she was last seen crossing third to Catkins in the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) in Sydney last September.

Bounding flies fresh proven by her stellar first-up record (6-4-2-0) that she will be out to add to on Saturday following a blistering five and a half-length trial win at Randwick over 837m on February 19.

Team Snowden also have Dothraki nominated to resume in the Oakleigh Plate field this weekend, the Mossman gelding another recent Sydney trial winner who is yet to run at Caulfield.

The last three-year-old Oakleigh Plate winner was Starspangledbanner (2010) and along with Heatherly there are a number of other youngsters well fancied to break the six-year drought with success on Saturday.

The other early picks of the three-year-old Oakleigh Plate contingent include Keen Array, Secret Agenda and Kinglike.

David Hayes & Tom Dabernig trained Bel Esprit gelding Keen Array who won the Listed Blue Sapphire (1200m) at Caulfield in mid-October before his good second to last weekend’s Black Caviar Lighting third placegetter Japonisme in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) during Flemington’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Secret Agenda is a three-year-old daughter of Not A Single Doubt trained locally by Mick Price who prepared Lankan Rupee for his 2014 Oakleigh Plate win, while Kinglike is a Group 2 winning Exceed And Excel colt trained by Peter Moody.

Black Heart Bart is another interesting Oakleigh Plate nomination in 2016, Melbourne Cup winning trainer Darren Weir taking over the former WA-trained son of Blackfriars.

To date Black Heart Bart has won 10 of his 26 starts, his only run outside of Perth being a dead last in the 2015 Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane.

He was last seen running second to Delicacy in Ascot’s Group 2 CB Cox Stakes (2100m) in December.

Other notable Oakleigh Plate hopefuls include Atmospherical for last year’s winning trainer Robert Smerdon, Hawkes Racing’s recent Kensington Stakes winning colt Headwater and third in the same Flemington lead-up The Quarterback.

Full Oakleigh Plate 2016 nominations are in the table below, the final field of acceptances out on Wednesday.
